115cm x 185cm. Made by Bendita Naas in 2015, Oecusse, Timor-Leste. This Tais is a traditional Timorese 'Men's Cloth'. It is made from handspun cotten, hand dyed using plant dyes and handwoven over three months. The flower motif is a traditional pattern from Oecusse, a coastal exclave in the western part of the island, separated from the rest of East Timor by West Timor.

  • Timor-Leste (or East Timor) is the poorest nation in the Asia Pacific region. The main challenges for women in Timor-Leste remain deep poverty and domestic violence.  Pathways to income generation and entrepreneurship are critical as a large percentage of Timorese women are sole providers for their family. Trading locally produced products is key to alleviating poverty in Oecusse where the average income is $2 a day, and it is key to retaining traditional motifs and weaving.
